IA really cheap alternative is a cd player that can play mp3 cds...I bought one for 22.50 (sony) from ebay to listen to books on cd, but as a bonus, the package included software that allows you to record up to 490 songs on a disk...that is pretty much more music than I personally own. So, for less than 30 bucks (inc. shipping) I got the cd player, software, and a cassette coverter to play it in the car. Pretty cool. Of course, you would need a pc with a cd burner...The model that I bought was D-NE326CK MP3/ATRAC3 CD Walkman, but there are probably others, also. I don't know if this will do what you want it to, but thought I would mention it just in case.
I thought about getting an mp3 cd player, but I think I need something smaller so can slip it in my pocket when I'm on the subway. I used to have an ipod, but it was stolen out of my backpack (because I couldn't fit it in my pocket!).
Are the sony/creative brands compatible with mac laptops? The cheaper ones don't seem to have much capactiy, or ability to pick songs...
I HAD one, but it got stolen last spring. since then I have been humming in my head a lot, but it's getting old. Also, I will soon be having 40 min subway commutes, and it would be nice to listen to music instead of grumbling.

Sony. Creative. Both good.

You could check something like Craigslist to find someone who's upgrading and getting rid of their older iPod. Riskier, but potentially cheaper

I love my creative player - sometimes being more selective because the capacity is lower can be a good thing - a sort of refining process

I like those sony's that are shaped like beans. They have them on overstock.com. Too cute...someone else can perhaps comment on their functionality.
I love my nano. Very, very much
UPDATE! Thanks for the votes! I just ordered a refurbished nano for $99.
(also, I went to the apple store to look at the color nanos, and I wasn't super excited about them anymore.)
