dear internet, I was going to go back to Melbourne this summer (like I did last summer) to visit some of my favourite friends who have variously moved of there, and possibly play some gigs. I miss them all heaps, but I was thinking, since I've never travelled other than to Australia and Fiji (from New Zealand), that maybe I should go to Thailand, which I could do on only a slightly bigger budget...
Should I...

Thailand is nice but it's extremy touristy (especially south thailand), it of course depends on what you want to get out of this trip. I'd suggest going to north thailand if thailand is where you want to go or travel through the smaller countries that borders north thailand. Living is pretty cheap in thailand, and food cost ridiculously little so you only need to set aside ,oney for the plane tickets and traveling/sightseeing etc unless you plan to do some serious shopping. Unless of course you plan to stay at a flashy hotel on an island in south thailand in which case you'll pay significantly more...
Nope, I'm for the North Thailand plan - probably including some motorcycle trekking... Thanks FB.
Can you go to Thailand AND australia in the same trip? Or maybe your Australian friends can meet you in Thailand?
That'd be nice... doesn't look likely either way though, as they've already travelled recently, and i'll have enough trouble saving for one airfare...
if this is the second year you would have bailed, you really ought go and see your buds and catch up on the fun in australia... or they may think you no longer love them
no, I went and saw them last summer.
Friends aren't that easy to come by, and playing gigs sound brilliant too. It is never too late to travel (to most destinations), but seing your friends is worth going back. Methinks. But then I've never been to Thailand!
Where are you now? Thailand will always (hopefully, touch wood) be there. Gigs you can always do. Go travel to those places which have amazing things to see and do (it depends on your interests, like, why are you going to Thailand, for culture or for beaches?) but are relatively off the beaten track. Try Cambodia, which is just glorious and incredibly cheap, unbelievable food, people, history, temples. But go now because they are seriously considering closing down the hands on access to the wats (safety issues). or places like Laos, Sarawak etc. Get the cheap airlines, like air Asia to get to Sarawak, or president airlines. You can rent motorcycles easily in Cambodia. Also, again, depending on your interests, don't stay in main cities (for Sarawak) just spend the nights in the national park lodges (about $2.50), absolutely amazing.
If they are your friends, they should understand. And you can make new ones along the way if you go travelling.
Whatever you do, love, enjoy and stay safe!
Looks like I'll probably be going to Melbourne in late January, then to Thailand just before the start of monsoon season, July-ish, I think...
