i dont think its sad mostly because hes a father, i think its sad because he was something of an icon that encouraged people to get out and see the world... though the rest of us, for example, might use a shark cage when swimming with sharks or whatever...

I don't think he died doing something obviously stupid. He's described as only the third ever victim of a stingray attack in Australia. It would have been funny if he'd died from a snake bite or crocodile.

My own view is with Mike on this one. The other choices were just what I saw from my roommates, and I thought they'd probably be common views. And yeah, apparently stingrays are normally really passive and laid back. So not terribly stupid at all.

i don't know this guy at all, being in brazil and having no cable tv. but i saw something about his death on news, and i saw images of him feeding crocodiles with a baby on his arms. now, THAT is stupid.
but, as a marine biologist and a diver, i have to say one has to know the animals of an area well before diving there. where i live, we can dive with sharks without big worries, because we know the shark species we have here is harmless, as long as we don't touch them. now i don't know the species of stingray that killed him, but what i saw was that he got too near to the animal, knowing it was venomous, and even so the wound killed him before the poison. so i guess he did something wrong, yes.

but i tend to dislike professional adventurers like that. we have one here on brazil and we know he stages his shows. he "rents" animals from zoos and pretends they're wild in front of the camera. he has many animals in his house without the proper documents and permissions from wildlife protection institutes, and he's mostly an asshole. many times i've seen him on tv dealing with animals in the wrong way, and stressing them more and more. i don't know how he hadn't had an accident yet.
these guys may "teach" people to love nature, but i'm still to see one who really knows what he's talking about. and when you don't know what you're doing, bad things happen. once i had to go to the hospital because i hurt myself in a sponge i found in a 1-foot deep pond on the beach.
it's all very well to love nature, but i'd keep the hugging to trees. nature deserves respect before all other things.

Anyone who says his death was deserved in any way, as I have actually heard from a few people, is disgusting. No one deserves to die, and especially not a one who was so positively excited about the natural world (and passed that excitement on to others).

And didn't he save a lot of lives? As I understood it, when he rescued crocs from places it usually in a situation where without him they would've been shot. I may be wrong, but that's what I always thought.

On a lighter note, apparently ESPN has been playing the commercial he made for them a lot since the new got out. It's on youtube, and is pretty funny.

very sad for his family and fans but ultimately not unexpected. as his friend and producer said, he was never going to die peacefully in his sleep.

johnny, i know nothing about taking the barb out. all i read was that he was swimming too near and the stingray got scared and attacked him. i can comment on lots of stupid things the brazilian guy did, and nothing about irwin except the crocodile feeding with baby on his arms, that's the only thing i ever saw of him.
the brazilian adventurer today went into a tank full of stingrays, to "show his love for nature and that he's not stoping because of a fatality).

We've all got to go some time, and Steve was obviously okay with the fact that his lifestyle lent itself to a greater likelihood of injury and death.

I think it's great that, given the fact that we all die, he died doing what he loved.
