Actually, I think I've found the meaning of 42 and I've wanted to share it for years. I saw it one day on the #42 bus in Providence, RI. The bus has a scrolling screen that says "Providence via Hope" and it all clicked for me. That's the answer. Salvation/heaven/paradise/whatever-you-want by means of hope. There you go.
