I vote for either Stardust by Neil Gaiman or Enchantment by Orson Scott Card. The first is sort a Victorian style fairy-tale, and the Card is a "what if this fairy tale really happened, and now?" type of story. Both are excellent.
:) i just finally read stardust last week and lent it yesterday to self-same brother i mentioned in the first comment. read stardust! it's excellent. or, hey, i'm a writer, be a beta reader for me, lol. jk.
Assasination Vacation by Sarah "The Incredibles, Violet" Vowell. Take a trip through the history of the 4 assasinated American presidents. be dumbfounded when you learn about the shrine to John WIlkes Booth that Vowell found in Maryland. AV is a funny, nice and informative read about choice bits of american history.
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. CATCH 22 has been on the list to read for quite some time, but after SLAUGHTERHOUSE I think I want something in a different vein. I've read STARDUST (looking forward to the flick) and THE PRINCESS BRIDE, so I think I'm going to go with SATANIC VERSES. I've noted all the other suggestions, though, as this will not be the last book that I read!
I know I'm late hopping on the suggestion train, but who'm I to let that interfere with suggesting worthy reading material? I highly, HIGHLY reccomend anything by Charles deLint, but most especially anything in his Newford series. Start at the beginning with 'Dreams Underfoot' if you don't mind short fiction. If you prefer full length novels, go for 'Trader', 'Someplace to be Flying', 'The Onion Girl', or 'Forests of the Heart.'

Excellent question. While Illuminatus! is indeed amazing, life's short, read something new!
How about JPod? Truly excellent book.
I second alisa. Catch-22 is a fun read.
