"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." And exercise doesn't have to be tedious and tiring (I know that's what always turns me off the idea). Are there any parks or neighborhoods with nice architecture around you? Go for some long walks and enjoy the sights. Keep in mind too that poundage isn't as important as health, and where that poundage comes from. Trading squish for muscle won't necessarily change your weight, but it will still change your shape, energy level, etc. Please stay away from diet pills and the like, they won't give you any long term benefit and may adversely affect your health.
Go for fun exercise - sex is always a great way to get toned up. So is trampolining for three minutes a few times a week.
Three things that worked for me at various periods of my life (not necessarily at my current age though) are:
a) will power, I could lose (short-term) a couple of kilos or more overnight when required (in my youth!).
b) a breakfast diet of a chocolate-sprinkled doughnut and a short, skinny, double latte. Dropped about six kilos in three weeks [may also have been due to huge amount of stress i was under at the time ;)]
c) usually effective: eat three sensible meals a day, but stop eating by 6pm, only fruit and water thereafter. Also, simply eliminating all junk food like crisps, pastries etc, helps a lot I find.
Don't buy the whole, "Busting your ass everyday will give ya a six-pack." You just need to watch what you eat, & if anything, just take a nice walk everyday. That's how I lost a lot of weight, & it wasn't because of some fad diet.
I also want to state that if you don't get the results you want, remember that your genetic code states how you look. Some are born to be skinny, some are born to be "obese," & some are born to be muscular.
It's not about pounds (or kilos grin ) it's about inches (or.. centimeters?). All of (ignoring the meth) the advice above is good, imho. Just want to add my two cents (or pence. beating a dead horse now?). My mom and I both go to Curves to work out. She's wanting to get healthier and lose weight and I want to get healthier and tone up. We've both learned that the best way to gauge your weight loss is with a measuring tape. The worst way to keep track of your weight while your trying to lose it is with a scale, because muscle weighs more than fat and weight loss doesn't happen overnight. Eat healthy , exercise a minimum of three times a week (join a gym or Curves if you can), make sure you stretch before and after exercise, drink lots of water, and ditch your scale. Also, learn to look at your body and see things about it to love instead of hate.

Kinda obvious: Eat less.
my thoughts exactly... but the best way is to eat less (and more healthily - lots of veggies!) and to combine it with exercise.
