So my dad got me a new laptop for Christmas- something I've desperately needed for quite a while. The issue is, it's an IBM Thinkpad, and while I've been lusting after the Thinkpad for a while (and am SO grateful to my dad for shelling out the cash to get one), it's one of the models that comes with a trackpoint button instead of a touch-sensitive trackpad. I've always hated trackpoints- I find them really counterintuitive and annoying to use (and mentioned this to my dad), and having played with my laptop for a few days the issue hasn't gotten any better. I'm using my old horrible clunky Compaq right now just because I find the IBM so irritating. There are some other issues with the computer as well- the hard drive is only 60gb, and using Vista it's locked up a few times just running Firefox. I think he got the cheapest standard model, and the hardware doesn't seem to be that great.
My question is: if I return the computer, pay all the restocking fees and whatnot and pay the difference to get a better model (one WITH a trackpad), will my dad be horribly offended? I'm trying to think of a way to phrase the question with tact, but nothing is coming to mind and it's been making me quite sad. I am extremely grateful to him, of course, for buying me a laptop- I mean, I don't want to be that annoying spoiled college kid- but the machine itself just doesn't seem to be fitting me. As I said, I'd pay for all the difference for a better one, but... man, I don't want to be a terrible giftee.
