dear internet,

When I finish my PhD in medieval studies, should I stay in the UK and try and find a job here, where I feel more at home, and in closer proximity to the primary sources of my research, or return to the US, so that I can be closer to my family, and hope for generous grants to do short research trips and attend conferences in the UK?

My history dept just got a medievalist, and the poor guy is from Canada--he moved to West Virginia. Fair bit of culture shock there, I think. Anyway, my dept has hired 5 new professors, all of them tenure track, just this year--and only two people retired recently. They all say that the job market for history profs here is exploding, at the national conference I read about new phds who literally got more offers than they had time to interview for. So, if you do come to the US, I'd say you stand a pretty good chance of getting a decent job. Good luck!

Hey, we do that in the US too, there is just a large majority in this country that also doesn't seem to have any respect for history.
